Toyota RF & VF

RF1A, VF1A, VF2a Transfer Case Tech

The Toyota RF and VF series transfer cases are produced by Japanese manufacturer Aisin Seiki. All three cases are cast from lightweight aluminum, although the RF1A is a gear driven unit while the VF1A/VF2A are chain driven gear boxes. These units were mass produced for various Toyota pickup and 4Runner applications over a broad period of time, making replacements readily available.

The Toyota RF1A transfer case is manufactured by Aisin Seiki. It's an aluminum cased, gear drive transfer case used in select Toyota pickups from 1979 to 1995 and the Toyota 4Runner from 1983 until 1993. It was offered in both "Forward Shift" and "Top Shift" variations, and mechanical and electric shift versions. The forward shift model shifted the transfer case via shift rails near the rear of the transfer case and had a plate bolted to the top of the case that blocked off the top opening. The top shifting version had a shifter that mounted through the top of the case, accessing the shift rails internally. The transfer case is relatively robust for Toyota crawlers, and favorable over most chain drive Toyota models. There is an available aftermarket upgrade that converts the low range to an outstanding 4.7 : 1 ratio.

The Toyota VF1A and VF2A are both part time, chain drive, cast aluminum transfer cases. They were used in 1984 to 1995 Toyota pickups and 4Runners. The shift mechanism type distinguishes the VF1A from the VF2A - the 1A is a top shift, while the 2A uses a linkage system mounted to the side of the case. The transfer case is approximately 12.5 inches long, and though unfavorable over a gear drive transfer case, has a respectable 2.57 : 1 low range. In addition, the transfer case was only offered with two separate input configurations and a single output spline configuration, making swaps that much easier.
