Ford SVT F150 Lightning

2nd Gen SVT Lightning Specs & History

The 2nd Gen SVT Lightning was launched for the 1999 model year. The redesigned lightning featured fresh new styling features and unmatched performance, promising potential buyers the opportunity to own the World's fastest production pickup for under $30,000. Available only as a regular cab, step side model, the Lightning was much more than a standard F150 with visual accents. An Eaton supercharged 5.4L V-8 provided 360 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque in 1999, and was later upgraded to 380 hp and 450 lb-ft. A 4R100 4 speed automatic transmission was borrowed from the Ford Super Duty line up to transmit power to a limited slip 9.75" rear axle, and traction was maximized by Goodyear rubber. The engine was designed by Roush and Ford's Special Vehicle Team, upgraded with such parts as forged rods, lower compression pistons, and crankshaft. While only 3 colors were offered in 1999, by 2004 buyers had 7 color choices. A special sport suspension with Bilstein shocks helped keep the truck planted through corners. Production of the Lightning haulted in 2004, and did not continue with the restyling of the Ford F-150 for 2005 though several prototype vehicles have been spotted since.

F150 Lightning Facts

• Staggering the shocks in the rear of the vehicle reduces axle wrap under heavy acceleration and it was necessary considering the engine puts out 440-450 lb-ft of torque.
• The 4R100 automatic transmission used in the SVT Lightning was designed for use in Ford's Super Duty truck lineup (3/4 and 1 ton trucks). It was even used to manage the torque of the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel through 2003.
• The water-to-air intercooler cools the intake charge, making it denser. An intercooler is used to optimize performance in forced induction applications since compressing air increases its heat.
• Both the F150 SVT Lightning and 5.4L V-8 that powers it were built at Ford plants in Ontario, Canada.
• During its production span (1999-2004), the 2nd Generation SVT Lightning was the World's fastest production pickup. It was not until 2003 that Guinness certified the title of "World's Fastest", when an F150 Lightning went 147 mph off the showroom floor.
• The 1999 and 2000 model lightnings completed the 1/4 mile in 14.6 seconds, with a trap speed of 97 mph.
• Ford unveiled a 3rd generation SVT Lightning using the 2005+ F150 as a platform, but the concept truck has yet to become a reality.
• The SVT Lightning featured a unique dual side exhaust system that remains a popular style as an aftermarket system for F150 owners.
