Ford AOD, AODE Automatic Transmission

AOD, AODE Transmission Specs & Ratios

The AOD was introduced for the 1980 model year and used in the 1980 to 1986 F-150, 1982 to 1993 Ford Bronco, and many Ford passenger cars. It was Ford's first 4 speed overdrive transmission and was used to replace many of their 3 speed transmissions (C4, C5, etc). The preliminary design for the AOD can be traced back to the 1960s, where it was initially named the XT-LOD (extension lock up overdrive) and later the FIOD (Ford integrated overdrive). The AOD was converted from hydraulic shift solenoids to electronic ones and renamed the AODE for 1992. The AODE became the basis for the 4R70W transmission that took over in 1993.
