Ford 3.3L Ti-VCT V-6

Ford F-150 3.3L V-6 Specs and Information

Ford Motor Company replaced the short-lived 3.5L Ti-VCT V-6 (non-EcoBoost) in the Ford F-150 with a smaller 3.3 liter version of the engine for the 2018 model year. Both the 3.3L and 3.5L engines belong to the Ford Cyclone engine family, as do the earlier 3.7L and 4.0L V-6 engines. As a result of direct fuel injection and a relatively high 12 to 1 compression ratio the new, smaller V-6 produces marginally higher horsepower and torque than the 3.5L while increasing fuel economy by 1 mpg in the city and 1 mpg in the highway (two wheel drive models).

Named in certain references as the "Duratec 33", the 3.3L Ti-VCT V-6 engine shares a similar platform with Ford's 4.0L, 3.5L, and 3.7L (the later two engines have since been retired in F-150 models, the 4.0L was never made available in a full-size truck), in addition to similarities with the popular twin turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost. The most prominent reason for removing the 3.5L Ti-VCT (non-EcoBoost) from the F-150's engine lineup was likely to introduce a more fuel efficient alternative, although one could argue that it may be easy for potential buyers to experience confusion over the 3.5L Ti-VCT and 3.5L EcoBoost; two very different engines in terms of performance and the ensuing capability of trucks equipped with each respective engine. While the differences in fuel economy between the 3.3L and 3.5L are somewhat small, the 3.3L does not sacrifice any performance in replacing the 3.5L and the additional mpg contributes to Ford's total fleet fuel economy.

The 3.3L V-6 is standard on most F-150 models and is an economical option for pickup owners whose needs are met by a smaller powerplant. It is the only engine option for 2018 that does not come standard with Ford's 10 speed automatic transmission. Rather, the 3.3L comes mated to the Ford 6R80 six speed automatic transmission 2018/2019).
