Ford 5.0L Modular V-8 ("Coyote")

5.0L V-8 Engine Specs & Info

The 5.0L Modular V-8 replaced the 4.6L/5.4L engine options in the Ford F-150 for the 2011 model year. The engine is manufactured primarily using pre-existing engine production tooling at Ford's Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Despite it's relative high 10.5 : 1 (11.0 : 1 in the Ford Mustang) compression ratio, the 5.0L V-8 is designed to run on regular 87 octane unleaded gasoline. Inspiration for the engine was drawn from Ford's iconic 5.0L Coyote Indy racing engine and thus referred to internally as the "Coyote" V-8. In developing the mass produced V-8, Ford also reportedly gained insight from their racing divisions 5.0L "Cammer" crate engine.

With a 3.63 inch bore and 3.65 inch stroke, the engine features a nearly square bore-stroke ratio. The cylinder head intake port design is said to outflow those of a Ford GT. Originally introduced with 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, the engine was upgraded with a more efficient cylinder head design and improved variable camshaft timing system, increasing peak engine output to 385 horsepower and 387 lb-ft of torque for the 2015 model year; the improved 5.0L V-8 coincided with Ford's release of the aluminum bodied F-150.
